Brighton Man To Be Sentenced Thursday

A Brighton man accused of causing the death of 80 calves through neglect and starvation is expected to be sentenced on Thursday. 32-year-old Jeffrey Schmeckel pleaded guilty Monday to one count of mistreatment of animals causing death, a felony. In exchange for his plea, the Kenosha County District Attorney’s office agreed to drop two additional felony counts and seven misdemeanor counts of providing improper animal sanitation and shelter. Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Phan said her office will recommend that Schmeckel be sentenced to one year of probation. Schmeckel also agreed to pay an estimated $6,000 in restitution on sentencing, that money going to repay agencies for the cleanup of the farm.
