Carthage Athlete Charged in Sex Crime

A Carthage College linebacker is facing charges of second-degree sexual assault after being accused of assaulting one of his passed out teammates in a school dormitory on Sunday. 19-year-olf Lawrence Gaines, of Merrillville, Ind., made his initial court appearance on Thursday. He was arrested early Sunday morning and released from custody after posting a $2,500 cash bond. According to Kenosha Police, the 18-year-old victim said he passed out in Gaines’ dorm room after an off-campus party. When he woke up, he claims the suspect was on top of him. Gaines faces up to $100,000 in fines and up to 25 years in prison, if convicted.
