Gov. Evers Announces $10 Million in Federal Funding to Combat Air Pollution and Traffic Congestion in Wisconsin
Madison, WI (WLIP)–Gov. Tony Evers, alongside the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), has announced more than $10 million in federal funding to combat air pollution and traffic congestion in Wisconsin.
This initiative aligns with National Clean Energy Week, which Evers proclaimed from September 23 to September 27, 2024, and furthers his administration’s commitment to clean energy and infrastructure development.
The funding comes from the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement Program, aimed at supporting transportation solutions that reduce emissions, enhance mobility, and improve public transit.
WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman emphasized that the program will help reduce travel delays and tackle real-time traffic issues in urban areas, while U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of the program.
CMAQ projects include upgrades to traffic flow, intersections, and pedestrian and bicycle facilities, with an 80% federal cost share for eligible counties in Southeast and Northeast Wisconsin.
This announcement follows Gov. Evers’ broader efforts to modernize infrastructure across the state, with over 7,400 miles of roads and 1,780 bridges improved since 2019.
WisDOT is currently accepting proposals for the 2025-2028 CMAQ cycle until September 30, 2024.
