Horse Killed in Wadsworth Hit-and-Run; Lake County Sheriff Seeks Information
A horse was killed in a hit-and-run incident Monday night in Wadsworth.
On September 2, 2024, around 9:10 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a traffic crash in the 40800 block of North Delaney Road, where they found an injured horse being tended to by several people.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a larger vehicle, likely a pickup truck, was traveling northbound on Delaney Road when it struck the horse, which was walking southbound in the northbound lane.
The driver fled the scene, and it’s unclear whether the horse had a rider or if it had escaped from a nearby ranch.
A drone and canine search of the area did not find a rider, and attempts to identify the horse’s owner by checking local ranches and farms were unsuccessful.
Due to the severity of the horse’s injuries, a veterinarian on the scene determined that the only humane option was to euthanize the animal.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident and urges anyone with information to contact them at 847-377-4000.
The Sheriff’s Office also extended thanks to the Gurnee Police Department, Waukegan Police Department, and Newport Fire Protection District for their assistance.
