KUSD Continues Review After Roosevelt Elementary Incident; Suspect Appears in Court

KENOSHA, Wis. (WLIP) — Alert school staff at Roosevelt Elementary School prevented a potential security threat Thursday when they identified and reported suspicious behavior by a former student attempting to enter the building.

The incident occurred when the unidentified individual, carrying a suspicious bag, paused outside the school office.

Staff members noticed unusual behavior and immediately notified authorities.

Keith Lowry, a student teacher at Kenosha Unified, downplayed his role in the incident after being hailed as a hero.

“Our instincts took over, and we relied on our training to ensure everyone’s safety,” Lowry said. “The true heroes are the staff at Roosevelt—they ensured our students experienced a normal day.”

The Kenosha Police Department reported that the suspect was apprehended within hours of the incident.

During their first court appearance Friday, police disclosed that a search of the suspect’s home revealed only airsoft weapons, with no real firearms discovered.

Kenosha Unified Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Weiss emphasized that the absence of real weapons doesn’t diminish the incident’s significance.

School officials plan to review and enhance security policies in response to the incident. The district will provide support services for affected students and staff in the coming weeks.
