Motorcyclist Arrested for Aggravated DUI After Crash in Antioch Critically Injures Passenger
Antioch, IL (WLIP)–Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a serious motorcycle crash in unincorporated Antioch, which resulted in critical injuries and led to the arrest of the motorcycle operator on multiple charges, including aggravated DUI.
The incident occurred on August 31, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., near the intersection of Route 59 and Diemer Street, where deputies found a 43-year-old Antioch woman unconscious and unresponsive on the roadway after a 1998 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, allegedly operated by 51-year-old Gregory Shaer, lost control.
Shaer reportedly initially claimed he swerved to avoid another vehicle, but evidence at the scene and a statement from a GMC Acadia driver suggested he had sideswiped the vehicle after swerving into the wrong lane.
Signs of alcohol impairment were said to have been detected in Shaer, leading to his arrest after he apparently refused to provide a breath, blood, or urine sample for analysis.
A search warrant was obtained, and samples were sent to the crime lab for testing.
Shaer, who was charged with aggravated DUI resulting in great bodily harm, DUI alcohol, and driving in the wrong lane, remained in custody pending his court appearance.
The investigation is ongoing, with additional charges possible.
