Officer Involved Shooting in Waukegan

(Waukegan, IL) An investigation is underway after a police officer shot at a suspect who allegedly attempted to hit him with a vehicle.

Waukegan Police say the officer was off duty, but still in uniform on Monday night, when he was flagged down by someone concerned about a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot of an apartment building in the 22-hundred block of N. Butrick Street. As the officer approached, the suspect vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, nearly hitting the officer.

The 18-year police veteran fired at least once, hitting the suspect, a 22-year-old male. The suspect was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries, and the involved police official was hospitalized as a precaution.

Illinois State Police have been called in to investigate.
