Open Records Request Denied in West Death

KENOSHA, WI–The Wisconsin Department of Justice has denied an open records request by the Racine Journal Times for information related to the police shooting death of Tyrese West.
West was shot and killed by Mt Pleasant officer Eric Giese around 1:30 AM on June 15th. Police say Giese ` attempted to pull over West who was riding his bicycle without a light. The paper reports that last week the DOJ denied a request for audio and visual evidence in the case and related police reports. The denial cites the ongoing nature of the investigation.
West was shot because officers say he was uncooperative and was spotted with a weapon. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The DOJ says any evidence released now may jeopardize the investigation.
