Racine Man Faces Preliminary Hearing for Deadly Kenosha Mass Shooting
Kenosha, WI (WLIP)–A 22-year-old Racine man accused of playing a key role in a deadly mass shooting in Kenosha in July 2022 appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on Thursday.
Jerome M. Johnson faces over a dozen felony charges in Kenosha County Circuit Court, including first-degree intentional homicide as party to a crime, possession of a firearm by a felon, and multiple counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree intentional homicide.
After hearing the evidence, a judge bound over the case for trial.
The charges stem from a shooting that took place on the night of July 4, 2022, in the 6300 block of 25th Avenue in Kenosha.
Anderail K. Armstrong, 20, of Kenosha, was killed, and four others were seriously injured when shots were fired outside a home.
According to the criminal complaint, Johnson and several accomplices allegedly traveled from Racine to Kenosha with the intent to commit the crime.
Investigators identified Johnson as a suspect through his social media activity.
Witness interviews, physical evidence, and surveillance footage were also used in his identification.
The complaint details how dozens of bullets were fired that night, some of which struck nearby homes and vehicles.
Many residents initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks, as the shooting took place on Independence Day.
Johnson is being held at the Kenosha County Jail on a $1.5 million cash bond.
Two other men, Tremayne D. Martin, 24, of Kenosha, and Stephon D. Currie, 24, of Racine, have also been charged in connection with the shooting and are facing the same charges as Johnson.
Both are being held on $1.5 million bonds.
Martin’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 10.
Currie’s hearing is set for December 2.
If convicted, Johnson and his co-defendants could face life in prison.
