Man Who Died in Custody Identified

(Waukegan, IL) A man who died in Waukegan Police custody last week has been identified. Avion Cotton was arrested last week Thursday, after attempting to flee from officers.

While being taken into custody, Cotton started swallowing an unknown white substance, which left him in distress. The Waukegan man was later pronounced dead. Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said an autopsy revealed that the 31-year-old had an unknown rock-like substance in his throat and stomach, but showed no signs of physical trauma.

The matter remains under investigation by Illinois State Police.
